![]() ![]() But that makes them more human, and it makes us root for these poor trapped people. The family does make a lot of dumb mistakes that I think, after watching enough movies and shows like The Walking Dead, none of us feel we would ever make in an actual apocalypse. We really start to care about this family and want the creatures outside to just leave them alone. Well, you can decide when you watch it.Īs far as the movie itself, it starts out with kind of a slow burn, but that helps build tension. Hmmmm, different monsters, different movie, but some definite similarities. As I write, I realize some of the story sounds a little bit like 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE. I will say no more about plot as real spoilers will diminish your viewing pleasure. ![]() It doesn’t take long before we as the audience wonder, “Who are the real monsters?” Through some flashbacks we see that something terrible happened in the outside world, they weren’t allowed to leave, and now they have to stay hidden and follow their self-imposed rules to survive. But the boredom and loneliness is getting to them, not to mention that whatever is outside wants them gone. The family tries to make this cement hole a home, even making their own games. Ray (played by Alexander Skarsgard), his wife Claire (played by Andrea Riseborough), and their young daughter Zoe (Emily Alyn Lind) are now stuck in hiding from creatures above ground they call “The Breathers”. The story begins with a once average American family who have now had to exist for almost a year in a bomb shelter, since the world above them was destroyed by an outbreak of some sort. The movie is written and directed by new comers Matt and Ross Duffer. I really liked it despite some obvious low budget problems, and I think it’s a real “hidden” gem for fans of the apocalyptic/zombie sub genre. I picked up on it from a friend’s list of the top 10 underrated horror movies, and I feel this is a perfect example of just that. Hidden is an easy to miss film, since it is only out on-demand or DVD and never made it to the theaters (I watched it on Amazon Prime). But the style is much better than you usually get from this sort of movie which makes it frustrating for being flawed.‘Hidden’ is a must see for apocalypse horror fans What this all boils down to is that "Hidden Truth" has some major issues when it comes to the story which prevents this from being a gripping thriller. In fact the cast also do a decent job of playing their parts with Brendan McCarthy standing out for playing it rough and moody. Moore has delivered a decent thriller, yes the script is flawed but visually he has used the locations nicely to create atmosphere. The real annoying thing about "Hidden Truth" is director Steven R. The trouble is that it isn't in the least bit riveting and you end up scratching your head when the Sheriff reveals details of the case to Jamie which seem delicate and not the sort of thing you tell a grieving relative, although there seems little in the way of grieving going on anyway. Along the way Jamie finds some clues such as an envelope stashed with cash whilst she also has to deal with the Sheriff initial suspicions focusing on her brother. ![]() What this opening means is that "Hidden Truth" consists of Jamie turning amateur detective to find out who killed her niece whilst the killer sets about covering their tracks and setting up Pace at the same time. It is one of the issues which "Hidden Truth" has because we see who killed Zoe in the opening scene. Unfortunately when it comes to one off TV movies it doesn't have the benefit of that character familiarity and so showing the murderer right away is frustrating. When I think of an episode of "Columbo", almost every time they started with a murder where we witness who did it and it was fine because "Columbo" was all about the nature of Columbo catching the killer. When a teenager finds Zoe's body dumped in the lake everyone once again suspects Pace of being involved, everyone except Jamie who sets out to find the truth as to who murdered her niece and also her late sister-in-law. But Zoe has a secret as she has been carrying on with Michael ( Shawn Christian - Murder in the Hamptons), a friend of Jamie's, but is only using him so she can leave town, get away from her father and her family's history. It is why Zoe ended up being cared for by her aunt Jamie (Sarah Lind) who does her best trying to keep a moody teen happy. When Pace's ( Brendan McCarthy - Earthfall) wife died he not only had people suspecting him of murdering her but he hit the bottle and couldn't look after his daughter Zoe ( Diana Hopper - Lavalantula). ![]()
